简介：In1993,SamMendesdirectedanewproductionoftheshowfortheDonmarWarehouseinLondon'sWestEnd.ItstarredJaneHorrocksasSally,AdamGodleyasCliff,AlanCummingastheEmceeandSaraKestelmanasFrauSchneider.CummingreceivedanOlivierAwardnominationforhisperformanceandKestelmanwontheOlivierforBestSupportingPerformanceinaMusical.Mendes'conceptionwasaverydifferentshowfromeithertheoriginalproductionortheratherconventionalfirstrevival.ThemostsignificantchangewasthecharacteroftheEmcee.Therole,asplayedbyJoelGrey,inbothpriorincarnations,wasanasexual,malevolentcharacterinatuxedowithrougedcheeks.AlanCumming'sportrayalwashighlysexualized,wearingsuspenders(i.e.braces)aroundhiscrotchandredpaintonhisnipples.[4]Thecabaretnumber"TwoLadies"wasstagedwiththeEmcee,acabaretgirl,andacabaretboyindragandincludedashadowplaysimulatingvarioussexualpositions.[5]Thescorewasentirelyre-orchestrated,utilizingsynthesizereffectsandexpandingthestageband,withalltheinstrumentsnowbeingplayedbythecabaretgirlsandboys.Thebrutallysatiric"SittingPretty",withitsmockingreferencestodeprivation,despairandhunger,waseliminatedentirely,asithadbeeninthefilmversion,andreplacedwith"Money"."IDon'tCareMuch",whichwascutfromtheoriginalproduction,wasreinstated,and"MeinHerr"and"MaybeThisTime",fromthefilmadaptation,wereaddedtothescore.[5]Stagingdetailsdifferedaswell;insteadof"TomorrowBelongsToMe"beingperformedbyamalechoir,theEmceeplaysarecordingofaboysopranosingingit.MostdramaticofallwasinthefinalsceneinwhichtheEmceeremoveshisouterclothestorevealastripedsuitofthetypewornbytheinterneesinconcentrationcampsonwhichwerepinnedayellowbadge(identifyingaJewishprisoner)andapinktriangle(denotingahomosexualprisoner).OtherchangesincludedaddedreferencestoCliff'sbisexuality,includingabriefscenewherehekissesoneoftheCabaretboys.…
