简介:In1941Greece,ontheeveofGermanoccupation,cynicalAmericanforeigncorrespondentMichaelMorrisonarrivesinAthens,intendingtodepartforLondonthefollowingday.Inhishotelroom,Mikeisvisitedbyanti-fascistpoliticoDr.Stergiou,whoaskshimtocarryalistofGreekresistanceleaderstoBritishintelligenceinLondon.WhenStergiouadmitsthathecannotpayhim,Mikerefuses,thenwarnsStergiouagainstcarryingthelist.Thedoctorpretendstodestroythepaper,butunknowntoMike,placesitinMike'sjacketpocket.MikereluctantlyagreestomeetStergioulaterthateveningandthedoctoradviseshimofacontactintheeventofdifficulties.Unknowntothemen,GreekcollaboratorandGestapospyDimitriusTassoseavesdropsontheirconversation,thenreportstotheGermanheadoftheGestapoinGreece,KonradHeisler.Thatevening,MikewaitsforStergiouinaclub,butStergioutelephonestocanceltheirmeeting,revealingthathehasbeenfollowed.MikeisangeredwhenStergioutellshimthatthelistisinhispocketandurgeshimtomeettheirmutualcontact.Atthedesignatedplace,however,MikefindsthecontactmurderedandisconfrontedbyTassos,whotellsMikethatStergiouhascommittedsuicide.TassosthenoffersMikemoneyinexchangeforthelist,butMikeattacksTassosandflees.Tassosandhishenchmenpursuehim,butMikeescapesonapassingBritisharmytransport.WhenHeislerreportsMike'sescapetoCmdr.EricOberg,thecommanderrecommendsHeislertakechargeofthesituation.Meanwhile,afterthetransportisbombed,awoundedMikeisrescuedbyGreekfishermenwhobelievethatheisaBritishsoldier.Uponrevivinginalocalcottagewhereayoungpeasantgirl,Eleftheria,liveswithherbrotherAndreasandtheiruncleLeonidas,Mikediscoversthelistisstillintact.Afterrecovering,MikesitsinonameetingwithAndreasandseveralmenwhoplantoraidthemunitionsdepotforgunsanddistributethemtoalltheneighboringvillages.Afterthemeeting,EleftheriapleadswithMikenottogetinvolvedintheraid,buttheirconversationisinterruptedbythearrivalofBlueyFerguson,whoclaimstobeaBritishprivateandPOWescapee.Thefollowingevening,MikejoinsAndreasandtheothersontheirraid,buttheyareambushedbytheGermansandonlyMikeandAndreassurvive.WhileAndreasgoestotheothervillagestoreportthemassacre,MikereturnstotellLeonidasaboutthelist,whichheadmitstohavingmemorizedanddestroyed.MikesuspectsthatBlueywasaGermaninformantwhotippedthemofftotheraid.LeonidasandEleftheriaagreethattheonlywaytohelpMikeistomovehimtoalocalconvent,whosenunsandpriestshaveassistedseveralBritishsoldierstoescapethecountry.EleftheriatakesMiketoanabandonedthatch-hutvillageinthehills,whereheistoawaitAndreas,whowillescorthimtotheconvent.Thatevening,AndreasarrivesatthevillagejustaheadofaGermansquadaccompaniedbyTassosandlaterHeisler.LearningthatMikeiswaiting,Andreasattemptstoescape,butisshotinthebackbyTassos.HeislertellsLeonidasandEleftheriathatMikehasliedtothemandneverintendedtoprovidehelpfortheGreekresistance.DespiteHeisler'sthreattodestroythevillageunlessMikeisgivenup,Leonidasrefusestocooperate.Heislerordersthatallthevillagersberoundedupinthetownsquare,whereten,includingLeonidas,areexecuted.Althoughheartbroken,Eleftheriahides,thenatdawnjoinsMike.AvoidingamassiveGermansearch,MikeandElftheriamaketheirwaytotheconventsafely.WhenHeislerandTassosagainreporttheirfailuretoOberg,hesuggeststhatTassosmakeuseofhisformergirlfriend,LisaKyriakides,whoisawell-known,highlyplacedmemberoftheresistanceandwhomaybeblackmailedbythreatstohertwoyoungchildren.Acoupleofdayslater,LisaarrivesattheconventtoretrieveMike,whobidsfarewelltoatearfulEleftheria.LisatakesMiketoaflatinaharbortown,butwhensheidentifiesherself,heisdismissiveofherresistanceties,insistingthatwomenareineffectiveanddangerousbecausetheyareinvariablycompromisedbytheirsexuality.Later,LisameetswithHeislerandTassosandlearnsthatEleftheriawaskilledleavingtheconvent.HeislerdemandstoknowwhyLisahashiddenMike,andwhenHeislerreluctantlymentionsLisa'schildren,sheagreestobringMiketoapredeterminedmeetingplace.LisareturnstoMiketoinformhimshehasmadearrangementswithapriesttogethimoutofGreece.LisaandMikethenwalktoanearbychurchwhereHeisler,Tassosandseveralsoldierslieinwait,butLisacannotproceedwiththebetrayalandtheyreturntotheflat.There,sheconfessestoMikethatshebecamepersonallyinvolvedwithHeislerinordertogatherinformationfortheresistance,butthatithasbeendifficulttoextricateherselffromtherelationship.WhenLisatellsMikeofEleftheria'sdeath,heangrilydeclaresthathewillkillHeisler.DespiteLisa'sprotests,MiketakesagunshehadgivenhimandtricksHeislerintomeetinghim.HopingtoambushHeislerinthestreet,MikeispreventedbythearrivalofanassociateofLisa's,Chesney,whoconvincesMiketogiveuphisrecklessplan.Later,MikeagreestogiveLisathecontentsofthelistifshewilltakeherchildrenandflee,butsheexplainsthatHeislerhasmovedhersonanddaughtertoasecretlocation.ChesneythenmeetswithTassosandpersuadeshimtocaptureMikeandturnhimovertoObergdirectly,thuscircumventingHeisler.TassostakesChesneytoretrieveLisa'schildren,toexchangeforMike.Attheflat,LisatellsMikethatsheandChesneyhaveplannedtogethimandherchildrensafelyawaywhileshedivertsHeisler.Initiallyrefusing,Mikethenrealizesitistheonlysolutionandagrees.LisathenvisitsHeislerandheapologizesforhavingtocomplywithhisduty,butisstartledwhenLisasuggeststheymightresumetheirrelationship.Meanwhile,ChesneybringsTassototheflat,whereMikestunsTasso,thenescapeswithLisa'schildrenandapriestwhoescortsthemtoawaitingboat.LisapreventsHeislerfromacceptingavitalphonecallreportingthedisappearanceofherchildren.Later,uponhearingthechurchbelltoll,signifyingthatthechildrenandMikehaveescapedsafely,Lisaisrelieved.Heislerlearnsoftheescapemomentsafterward,butallowsLisatoleaveunharmed.…
