简介：ating,sleeping,poppingpills;eating,sleeping,poppingpills;andsleepingagain.Thesearetheonlyactivitiesthatseemtoenliventheeverydaylifeof300peoplelivinginaRomanianpsychiatrichome,inaforgottenregionsomewherebetweenthecapitalofBucharestandthesouthernCarpathians.Theunvaryingcyclethatthebodyadopts,betweenmedicationandwakefulness,resemblesthemovementoftheoldoilpumpsthatconstitutethelandscapesurroundingthehome.Substitutingasaninmateoftheasylum,thecameraattemptstoshowusfromtheinsidethisdailymonotony,thesesmallactsinthefightforsurvival.Itletsusseetheheavinessofthedormitoryandcorridorwalls,hearthedoorssqueaking,heartheperpetualshoutsoftheattendants,perceivetheinnervoidofsolitarybeingssurroundedbywallsofmen. 300patientsarepacked,sometimes12toaroom,intotheRomanianpsychiatricinstitutionofGuraOcnitei.Thedailyroutineisreducedtomedication,sleepandfood,withoutanykindoftherapyorreintegrationprogramme.Theinterneesofallbackgrounds(frommentallyorphysicallydisabledtosocialcases)arelefttothemselveswithnohopeofeverleavingthisplace,noperspectiveorfuture. Thus,theinhabitantshavecreatedtheirownclosedcommunity.Insidethisverypeculiarsociety,peoplebecomefriends,getmarriedandsplitupagain.Theytradewithcoffeeandcigaretteswhichhavecometoreplaceofficialcurrency.Andaboveall,musicbringssomecolourinthisdullness,andallowsthemtodreamofanotherworld.
