Johansson(born1943inMariestad)movedtoBerlininthelate1960s,wherehehassincebeenactiveinavarietyofmusicandartisticcontexts.HisfirstperformancestookplaceinthecontextoftheZodiakFreeArtsLabonHalleschesUfer,whereyoungmusiciansandartstudentseagerlyexploredtheboundariesbetweengenres.Inthe1970sand’80s,hewasaregularfigureontheWestBerlinFreeJazzscenethatformedaroundtheFMP/SÅJlabel.JohanssonhasbeencultivatinglongstandingmusicalfriendshipswithAlexandervonSchlippenbachandRüdigerCarl,and“developedhisownconceptofnoisemusicwithwhichhebecameaforerunneroftheEchtzeitmusikscenethatemergedintheeasternpartofBerlinafter1990inthenexusbetweensquats,freeimprovisation,punkandNewMusic”(WolfgangMüller).Inhisperformancesandcompositions,Johanssonexploresthemusicalrelicsof1950sand’60smodernism,oftenwiththehelpof“cheap”materialssuchascardboardorfoam.TheAustriancomposerPeterAblingerhastermedthispracticemusicapovera,inreferencetoArtepovera,whichelevatedeverydayobjectstoartandpromotedtheuseofunconventionalor“poor”materials.
