ItstartedoutasanattempttoadaptMargueriteDuras’1960novelDixHeuresetdemiedusoirenété,andthestoryofacouplewithateenagedaughterdrivingthroughaforeignlandstillformsthenarrativebackboneofRetrace.ItthengotaugmentedwithelementsfromMiklósMészöly's1979novellaSzárnyaslovak,inparticularthequestionofhowtwopeoplecanreactdifferentlytothesameevent.Eventually,itturnedintothestoryofanimmigrantreturningwithherfamilyfromhernewhomeinSwedentothe1980sRomaniaoftheCeaușescus,andaparallelnarrativesetpartlyinthepastofherchildhoodfriend,whocollaboratedwiththeregimes.UltimatelyitfounditsfinalshapewhenElekaddedsomeaspectsofherownfamilyhistory–thegruesomefateofhersisterVera,whowasmurderedinaconcentrationcampafterbeingabusedasaprostitutefortheguards.
