简介:Eachepisodeofthisseriesfocusesononetypeofnaturaldisaster,givingexamplesofsomeofthelargestormostdevastatinginrecentyears.Fromvolcanoes,earthquakes,typhoonsandavalanches–toonesthatushumansmayhavemoreofahandin,suchasforestfiresandlandslides. Thedisastersfeaturedhaveoccurredover100yearsandacrossallareasoftheglobe.Thelevelsofdevastationarephenomenal–oneoftheworstavalanchesofalltime,occurredinDecember1916,when10,000peoplewerekilledintheItalian-AustrianAlps.Muchmorerecently,onBoxingDay2005,agianttsunamicausedbyamassiveunderseaearthquakehitSouthEastAsia–devastatingthelandscape,andkillinganestimated229,866people. However–thisseriesisnotsolelyaboutthenumbersthathavebeenkilled.Someofthesephenomenaarejustsimplyremarkable,suchasin1896agiantwaterspout(atornadooverwater)wassightedoffshorefromMassachusetts,themostperfectthatanysailorhadseen.Althoughpowerful,becauseofitslocation,didnotposeathreat. Inmanysituations,itisthelandscapethatbearsthefullforceoftheblow,changingitforever.ThelargesteruptioninNorthAmericanhistoryoccurredin1912,whenMountKaimaitransformedanAlaskanvalleyintoa50milesquaremoonscapewhichhassincebeenusedforastronautsfortraining.Astheareawassodesolate,noonewaskilled,however,thelandscapeservesasapowerfulreminderoftheforceofthesenaturaldisasters,provingthatwearenowandalwayshavebeenatthemercyoftheelements.…
