简介：ThisfilmwasoriginallyshotbyFatherNorbertWeber(1870-1956),headoftheMissionaryBenedictines,duringhissecondvisittoKoreain1925onsome15,000metersofrawfilm.Fr.WeberwasabbotofthearchabbeyofSt.OttilieninGermanyandmadethefilminordertoshowthecountry,itsculture,andtheorder’sactivitiestopeoplebackinGermany.Itwasfirstscreenedtherein1927. Thefilmshowslong-lostimagesoftheearly20th-centuryKoreanPeninsula,beforetheKoreanWarseparatedtheNorthandSouth.Theimagesincludewomenspinningoncottonwheels,familiesmakingtraditionaltteok(ricecakes),alookatDongsomun(Seoul’sancientEastGate),whichwasdestroyedjustyearslater,andmissionaryactivitiesinwhatisnowNorthKoreanterritory. ThefootagewasoncestoredinaGermanmonastery,butlatertheNazigovernment,whichsidedwithJapaninWorldWarII,triedtoconfiscateitbecausesomeofitcouldbeinterpretedasespousingacriticalviewtowardtheJapaneseoccupationalregimeinKorea.Fortunately,amonksavedthefilm,hidingitbehindastonewallinthebasementbeforehediedduringthewar.Thefilmwasrediscoveredin1975duringarenovation.…
