WinfriedJungewasbornJuly19,1935,inBerlin.Afterfinishingschoolin1953,hestartedtostudyGermanphilologyatthecollegeofeducationatBerlin'sHumboldtUniversity.In1954,hewasoneofthefirststudentstoenrollatthenewDeutscheHochschulefürFilmkunstinPotsdam-Babelsberg.Furthermore,hepublishedfilmreviewsfrom1951to1955.Afterreceivinghisdiploma,hestartedtoworkfortheDEFAstudioofpopularsciencefilms,atfirstasadramaturgyassistant,thenthreeyearsastheassistantdirectortoKarlGass. In1961,JungewascontractedasadirectorfortheDEFAstudiofornewsreelsanddocumentaryfilms.Furthermore,hefinished"DertapfereSchulschwänzer",basedonthescreenplaybyVeraandClausKüchenmeister,in1967.Thischildren'smovie–filmedinadocumentarystyle–showsthediscoveryofthenewlyconstructedcenterandoldtownofEastBerlinfromtheperspectiveofaneleven-yearoldschoolboy.In1961,KarlGassencouragedJungetodoadocumentaryfilmaboutthetransitionfromkindergartentofirstgradeinschool.JungechoseagroupofchildrenfromthevillageofGolzow,inthedistrictSeelowintheareaofFrankfurt(Oder).Theshortdocumentaryfilm"WennicherstzurSchulegeh'..."thatturnedintothelong-termfilmproject"ChronikderKindervonGolzow"althoughthishadnotbeenplannedinthebeginning.Later,hiswifeBarbarawhomJungemarriedin1968startedtocontributetothefilmsandbecametheeditorforallhisfilmswhenhislong-timeeditorCharlotteBeckdied. InMarchof1991,theJungesendedtheirworkfortheDEFAstudios.Inthefollowingyears,theycontinuedtheirworkfor"GolzowerChronik"–partlysupportedbyTVstations–KlausVolkenborn's"Journal-Film".In1994,Klaus-DieterSchmutzer's"ajourFilm-undFernsehproduktionGmbH"becametheirnewproductioncompany.Sincethen,BarbaraandWinfriedJungeregularlyputoutfeature-lengthdocumentaryfilmsaboutthelifesoftheindividualGolzowprotagonistsbycombiningpreviouslyunreleasedmaterialwithnewtakes. Afterthelastpartoftheseries,"EigentlichwollteichFörsterwerden–BerndausGolzow"(2002/2003),BarbaraandWinfriedJungeconcludedtheir"Golzow-Zyklus"withthefour-partdocumentaryfilm"Undwennsienichtgestorbensind...DieKindervonGolzow"(2005-2008).WinfriedandBarbaraJungearelivinginBerlin. fromtheDEFAsite:TheprojectfollowedinhabitantsofthevillageofGolzowforoverfortyyearsandisoneofthelongest-runningdocumentaryprojectsinfilmhistoryworldwide.MostofJunge'sworkbetween1962and1988wasdonewithcameramanHans-EberhardLeupoldandlaterwithHaraldKlix.Jungehasmadesomefiftydocumentariesforbothcinemaandtelevision.TheseincludeproductionsfilmedinSyria,Somalia,Libya,GreatBritain,andUkraine.HisgreatestworkistheseriesaboutGolzow,thatcoversoverfourdecadesandisthelongest-runningchronicleinthehistoryofinternationaldocumentary.…
