WhattheTalibandidn'tknowwasthatmanyofthemostmagnificentobjectshadalreadybeenspiritedaway.Morethan25yearsagomuseumstaffhadhiddenthetreasuresasthebombsstartedtofall.(TheAfghanistangovernmentfoundthehiddentreasureboxesin2003andmadetheannouncementonAugust25,2003.Itquicklyaskedforinternationalassistanceinconductinganinventoryoftheartifacts.TheworkwasdoneinApril,May,andJuneofthatyear. EarlierthisyearasafecrackingatapresidentialpalacevaultindowntownKabulrevealedthattheentiretrovewasintact.NowaninventoryprojectfundedbytheNationalGeographicSocietyhascataloguedthemorethan22,000objects.Thecollectionincludesexquisiteivorystatuesand2,500years'worthofgoldandsilvercoins. ThediscoveryisarayofhopeinthequesttorestoreAfghanistan'sculturalheritage,mostofwhichhasbeendestroyedforeverbydecadesofwarandlooting.
