ThefirstpapertomakeamendswastheMailonSunday.Onpage18ofits4Julyissue,itcarriedasingle,butsignificant,paragraph: OnJanuary31,wepublishedsomepersonalinformationaboutVanessaPerroncelconcerninganallegedaffairwiththefootballerJohnTerry.Wehavesincebeeninformedshewouldhavepreferredthistoremainprivateanditwasuntrueinanycase.WeapologisetoMissPerroncelforanydistresscaused. OnSunday,averysimilarapologyappearedonpage18oftheNewsoftheWorld,whichcanalsobefoundonitswebsite.Itread: VANESSAPERRONCEL OnJanuary31andafterwardswepublishedsomepersonalinformationaboutVanessaPerroncelinarticlesconcerninganallegedaffairwiththefootballerJohnTerry. MissPerroncelhassinceinformedusthatshewouldhavepreferredherpersonalinformationtoremainprivateanditwasuntrueinanycase.WeapologisetoMissPerroncelforanydistresscaused. Theseapologiesareremarkable.Bothpapersnotonlyownuptohavingpublishedprivateinformationbutalsoadmititwasinaccurate.TheygoalongwaytovindicatingPerroncel'spublicstatementsaboutpressmisbehaviour. InAprilthisyear,afterPerroncel'slawyersentletterswarningofapossibleactionforbreachofprivacytosevenpapers,Iwrote: "Perroncel'sstoryofherdealingswiththesepapersisacatalogueofintrusiveness,inaccuracyandinnuendothatamountstoafull-frontalcharacterassassination." ThatfollowedaninterviewwithPerroncelbyNickDaviesinwhichshetoldhim: "Itislikeanightmare.Everydayyouthink:'Whatelsearetheygoingtosayaboutme?'Itissointrusiveandsofalse.Everyday,somanylies–andthenpeoplemakingjudgmentsbecauseofthelies." Atthetime,severalcommenterstomyblogpouredscornonbothDaviesandmyselfforacceptingPerroncel'sclaimsofnewspaperdistortionandlies. NowtwopapershaveownedupandIwouldn'tbesurprisedifathirdwasonthevergeofbeingpressuredintodoingthesame. ItistoPerroncel'screditthatshehaspursuedthismatterovertheinterveningmonths.Rightly,TheGuardian'slawyer,GillPhillips,recentlycommendedherforspeakingout. NotealsothecommentscriticaloftheNewsoftheWorldbyitsreaders,especiallyonebyMarian: "Thisisbizarre!IstheNewsoftheWorldsurprisedthatshewouldhavepreferredherprivatelifetoremainprivate?WhatexactlyistheNewsoftheWorldapologisingfor?Aretheyapologisingforwhattheynowacceptwerelies?"
