简介:Aftera7-Seasonabsence,"ThePriceisRight"(TPiR)returnedtotheairwavesontheCBS-TVNetworkonSeptember4-8,1972inanextensivelyrevampedformatas"TheNewPriceisRight"fromSeptember4,1972toMarch23,1973andwhichhasenduredtothisday.TheformatofthisBobBarker-hostedserieswassimple:AnnouncerJohnnyOlsen,RodRoddyandnowRichFieldscallsoutthenamesoffourpeopleatthestartoftheshowandtellsthemto"C'mondown!"Aprizeisshownanddescribedalwaysfingeredbybeautifulwomen{ergo:TheBarker'sBeauties}.The4contestantscameto"Contestant'sRow"1atatimegive1bid(indollars($)only)ontheprizeandtheymustn'texceedtheactualretailprice(ARP)oftheitemtobeknowntheoverbid.AfterBarkerannouncestheARP(orthebiddingprocessrepeatedifeveryoneoverbidsergo:TheLowestBidisi.e.:$600),thecontestantwhobidclosestisinvitedonstagetoplayapricinggameforalargerprize.Prizesatthisstageofthegameincludedcars,trips,roomsoffurniture,cash,etc.{ThePricingGames};furswerealsogivenawayduringtheearlyyears,butthispracticewasdroppedasperBarker'swishes(becauseofhisinvolvementinanimalrightsissues).Fromtheoriginal3gamesplayedin1972,thenumberofpricinggameshasgrowntomorethan70witheachhavingtheirownsetofrulessomegamesinvolvedpricinggroceryorsmall,everydayitems;othersinvolvedchance,deduction,skilland/orpatience.Aftereachpricinggamewasplayed,1morecontestantwascalledfromtheaudienceto"c'mondown"andanother1-biditemwasshown.After3pricinggames,the2contestantswiththehighestwinningswillgototheShowcase.2Showcases(i.e.,prizepackagesworthseveralthousanddollars)wereshown,1atatime;thetopprice-valuedwinningcontestanthadthechoicetobidontheshowcaseorpassittohis/heropponentandforcehim/hertobid.Thecontestantcomingclosest,withoutexceedingtheARPofhis/herownshowcasewontheirshowcase;allShowcasecontestantswhooverbidordidn'tcometheclosesttotheARPoftheirshowcaselosteverythingtheywereshown.ThesyndicatedserieswasidenticalonSeptember11-17,1972exceptthatitwashostedbyveteranTVhostDennisJamesandtheprizesweremoreupmarket.OnDecember1-5,1975:Thedaytimeshowexpandedfrom30minutes(1/2Hour)to60minutes(1Hour)andnowhaving6pricinggamesafterIUFB'sandalsoaddedanewfeaturecalled"TheShowcaseShowdownfeaturingTheBigPricingWheel":After3contestantshaveplayedtheirpricinggameseachhasthechancetospinalargewheelinanattempttogetasclosetobutnottogoover$1total{ergo:TheWheelSpaces:5cents(Nickel)-10-15-20-25-30-35-40-45-50-55-60-65-70-75-80-85-90-95-100=$1.};hitting$1exactlyfor1Spin(orinacombinationof2spins)fromDecember1,1975toJune23,1978meantabonus$1000andfromJune26,1978totherestoftheperiod.Contestantsraised$1wereallowedtospinagaininanattempttowin$5000for5&15centsaka"TheGreenSection"thatpaintitgreen{ergo:$6000}or$10,000for"TheSame$1asBeforeandAfterwards"{ergo:$11,000}.The2winnersofthese2ShowcaseShowdownsgoestotheShowcase.Also,TheShowcasecontestantswhobidcloserthan$100in1972-1973andin1998-1999:$250totheARPoftheirownshowcasewonbothshowcases.Numerousotherchangeshavetakenplacethroughtheyearsandseveralprime-timespecialshaveaired.TPiR's5000thshowairedinMarch1998atwhichtimethestudiowheretheshowisshotwasrenamedtheBobBarkerstudio(formerlyStudio33}since"THETOASTOFTHETOWNakaTHEEDSULLIVANSHOW"onDecember10,1967.In2002TPiR's6000thShowaired.For1Bidderwhommadetheexactbidrightcollects$100in1972-1973andonNovember12,1998totherestoftheperiod:$500andontheNighttimeSpecials:$1000.WrittenbyBrianRathjen{[email protected]}…
