简介：TheBaruyabelongtotheAngagroupoftribes(formerlyknownastheKukukuku)oftheEasternHighlandsofPapuaNewGuinea.About1500Baruyapeopleliveinadozenvillagesandhamletsinthehigh,ruggedWonenaraandMarawakavalleys.TheyareagriculturalistsandarerenownedforthesaltwhichtheyproduceandtradethroughouttheEasternHighlands.EverytwoyearsorsoallBaruyagathertogetherinagreatdisplayofstrengthandunitytoinitiateanewgenerationofwarriors.Itisatimeofritual,instructionandordeal.FrenchanthropologistMauriceGodelierlivedwiththeBaruyafornearlythreeyears.In1969,withtheconsentoftheBaruya,heinvitedtheCommonwealthFilmUnit(nowFilmAustralia)toco-operatewithhiminfilminginitiationceremonies.ThefirsttwofilmsinthisseriesgiveageneralintroductiontoBaruyalife.Theremainingsevenfilmsformacontinuumandfollowtheinitiationceremonies,fromthebuildingoftheceremonialhousetothefinalfeast.WrittenbyNationalFilm&SoundArchive…
