ThisseasonwasnotableforthecontroversysurroundingWeekendUpdate.AnchorNormMacdonaldangeredNBCexecutiveDonOhlmeyer.MacdonaldoftentoldO.J.SimpsonjokesintheUpdatesegmentwhichupsetOhlmeyer,whowasgoodfriendswithSimpsonanddidnotfindthejokesfunny.OhlmeyerthenfiredMacdonaldfromthesegment,butnotfromtheshow,sinceOhlmeyerthoughthedidbetterinsketchesthanonUpdate.HisfinalUpdatewasintheepisodehostedbyHelenHunt.QuinnwasthenpromotedtothejobandbegananchoringthesegmentintheepisodehostedbySamuelL.Jackson.EventhoughMacdonaldstillperformedinsketches,hewasnothappyandhisstayontheshowwasshort-lived.HeendedupquittingtheshowafewmonthsaftergettingdemotedfromWeekendUpdate.HisfinalappearancewasintheshowhostedbyJulianneMoore.
