Withoutthepointbeingoverlylaboured,theclosingoftheminesinthisforgottenpartoftheNetherlandsisfeltineveryporeofthenarrative,likeawoundthatjustwon’theal.Thiscurse(Lei’sex-wifereferstoitasa‘punishment’)isgivenbeautifulvisualform.Manyofthesettingsaresombreanddark,likeomensofwhatistocome.Andduringacrucialcarjourneyundertakenbyfatherandson-themomenttheirestrangementbeginstosoundfinal(JeffreysaysLei‘soundslikeawoman’)-allwecanseeisaglimpseofLei’sface,andtotaldarknessisjustaroundthecorner. RemyvanHeugten,whogrewupinthisarea,hasmadeapersonal,grippingfilmthatconvincesoneverylevel:script,acting,camera,artdirectionandeditingareallrocksolid.TheabrasivelyrealisticstyleisunmistakeablyreminiscentofthefilmsoftheDardennebrothers,whosetmostoftheirfilmsjustastone’sthrowaway.WithGluckauf,theNetherlandsnowhasitsownversion,everybitaspowerfulandpainful.…
