LordanZafranovic(born11February1944inMaslinicaontheislandofSolta),isanacclaimedCroatianfilmdirector.LordanZafranovic'smostfamousfilmswereOkupacijau26slika(Occupationin26Pictures)andPadItalije(FallofItaly),bothofthemwarfilmsincoastalDalmatiansetting,andbothscreenedinCannesfestival. AfterreceivingadegreeinliteratureandvisualartsattheUniversityofSplit,ZafranovicenrolledatthefamousFAMUinPraguewherehestudiedfilmdirectingandwhereheeventuallygraduatedin1981.Heisthereforeconsideredpartoftheso-calledPragueSchool,agroupofacclaimedYugoslavdirectorsofthe60'sand70'swhoallstudiedthere.Hisfirstfilmsmadeintheearly1960'sweremostlyexperimentalshortswithgrotesqueandabsurdistinfluences.HisfirstnotableeffortsandfilmsthatmarkedthebeginningofhisregularfeaturefilmmakingwereChronicleofaCrime(1973)andPassionAccordingtoMatthew(1975),thelatterearninghimthecritics'awardatthePulaFilmFestival. Hismostimportantwork,thefirstpartofhisWWIItrilogy,Occupationin26Pictures(1978)followed.Thisdramafollowingastoryofthreeyoungmen'sfriendshipsetinWorldWarIIDubrovnikwentontowintheBigGoldenArenaforBestPictureatPulaFilmFestivalandwasahugeboxofficehitinYugoslavia.TheothertwopartsofhisWWIItrilogywereTheFallofItaly(1981)andEveningBells(1986).Inthemid1980'sheturnedtomoreintimatelovethemes,withfilmssuchasAnAngel'sBite(1984)andAloa:FestivityoftheWhores(1988).InthemeantimehealsodirectednumeroustvproductionsforRadioTelevisionBelgradeandRadioTelevisionZagreb. Duringthepoliticalturmoilintheearly1990'shemovedtoPragueandslowlysinkedintoobscurity.InhislateryearsheproducedadocumentaryfeaturecalledTheDeclineoftheCentury:TestamentL.Z.(1994),andafilminCzechcalledRevenge(1995).…
