ThenextdayhegoestothehilltoshowGilandhisfamilythathewillcomelivewiththem.Gil'ssonJim(SkipHomeier)teasesDannyabouthisfailuretokillthecougarandtheirdislikeofTom.DannythenrefusestolivewiththembecauseheremembersGilistheonewhomistreatedhismotherandrefusedtolethermarryTom.TomhearsthisandattacksGil,andthetwofight.DannyandJimalsogetintoafightwhentheangeredJimaccusesDannyofstartingthefight.DannyandTomwinbothfightsandTomtellsGilthatDannywillcontinuelivingwithhim. ThenextmorningTomtakesDannyhunting,butduetohisdislikeofkillinganimalsDannyrefusestotakeashotatadeer.Understandingthis,Tomtakesthegunandshootsthedeerhimself.However,thecougarhearsthenoiseandfollowsthemtoTom'scabin.WhileTomandDannyareintheshed,preparingtocutupthedeer,thecougarentersthefarmandnibblesatthecarcass.Tomfiresatthecougarandpursuesitintothewoods.Meanwhile,Dannygoesbackintothewoodstoretrieveagunheleftthere.Tomchasesthecougar,firingatit,butthecougarthensurpriseshimbyattackingfromabove.ThecougarkillsTomandrunsoffintothewilderness.
