Theterms"Urdu-speakers"or"Biharis"areusedtorefertoMuslimpeoplewhooriginallyemigratedfromIndiatothenewlycreatedEastPakistanin1947andafterwards. Manyofthem,butbynomeansall,originatedfromthestateofBiharandwerefleeinglargescalecommunalmassacres. Threedecadeslater,duringthestruggleforindependenceinBangladeshin1971,thiscommunitybecameembroiledinconflict.IsolatedascollaboratorsagainstBangladeshindependence,thismomentwasadefiningonefortheUrdu-speakersandhashadadevastatinglegacy.
