Kovalov'sfirstfeatureisaparanoidgrotesquepictureofthetotalitarianSovietpast,basedonthelifeandworkofDaniilKharms.MotifsfromthelifeandworkofAbsurdistwriterDaniilKharmsinspiredKovalovtocreateaparanoidandgrotesquepictureofthetotalitarianpast.InaLeningradcommunalhousein1939hangsthescentofasuppressedsexualitythatobsessesallthecharacters:fromtheweakandshyPoettotheJudgewhotriesonthemaskofHelmutBergerfromVisconti'sTheDamned.Thehallucinogenicimagesthatresultcanonlyhaveoneresult:massiveaggression,anarmadaofbombers,armedcrowdsthatflingthemselvesintothestrugglewiththefuryofspermatozoids.ThefilmisfullofnewsreelfootagefromthetimeofStalinismandtheThirdReichthatarecutveryingeniouslythroughthefeaturefragments.Withatypicalmixtureofaversionandaffection,ironyandamazement,Kovalovmanagestoevoketheinsanityofthisperiod.…
