Specializinginepicwarfilms,VeljkoBulajicrankedamongtheformerYugoslavia'smostpopularfilmmakersofthe'60sand'70s;athispeakhereceivedprivilegesdeniedotherdirectorsbyTito'sregime,makinghimtheobjectofconsiderablehatredamongsthiscolleagues.Bulajic'stwomostinternationallypopularfilmswerethewarspectacularsKozara(1962)andBitkanaNeretvi/BattleontheRiverNeretva(1969);thelatterfeaturedaninternationalcastandearnedBulajicanOscarnomination.Bulajicbeganhiscareerinthe1940sasajournalistanddirectorofshortYugoslaviandocumentaries.Duringthe1950s,BulajicenrolledinRome'sCentroSperimentalefilmschool,andafterwardassistedseveralrenownedItaliandirectors,includingFedericoFelliniandVittorioDeSica.HereturnedtoYugoslaviain1958andmadehisfeaturedirectorialdebutwithVlakBezVoznogReda/TrainWithoutaTimetable(1959),whichwonhiminternationalacclaim.His1963documentarySkopjewonmanyawardsandestablishedBulajicasaprominentfilmmaker.Hispopularitycametoanabruptendin1983whenhisepicVelikiTransport/GreatTransportprovedtobeacriticalandbox-officefailure.ThefilmnearlydestroyedBulajicfinancially,andhesubsequentlyspentmanyyearsincourtinvolvedinnumerouspublicscandals.…
