简介:Myeong-ja(KimSin-jae)andYong-gil(LeeWuk-ha)aresisterandbrother.Soldtohoodlumsasyoungchildren,thetwoareforcedintoalifeofbeggingandstealing.Oneday,Yong-gilrunsawayfromthehoodlumsandjoinsagroupoforphans.PhilanthropistBangSeong-bin(KimIl-hae)seesYong-gilbeingharassedbytheorphansandtakeshimhome.TherearealreadyfourorfivehomelesschildrenlivingwithBang,whoisplanningacharitableenterprisefororphans.Withthehelpofhisbrother-in-law,Dr.AhnIn-gyu,Seongpurchaseslandonwhichtobuildanorphanage,whichhenamesHyangrinwon,andbeginshisphilanthropicworkinearnest.Meanwhile,Dr.AhnmeetsMyeong-jabychance,rescuesher,andemploysherasanurse.Atthesametime,twooftheorphans,Yeong-palandHwa-sam,becomediscontentedwithlifeattheorphanageandattempttorunaway.Unfortunately,Yong-gil,whotriestostopthem,fallsintothefloodedriverandisleftincriticalcondition.Crossingtheriver,Yeong-palgoestoenlistthehelpofDr.AhnandMyeong-ja,andbringsthembacktoreviveYong-gil."AnearlylandmarkofRealisminKoreancinema" UntilitwasobtainedbytheKoreanFilmArchive(KOFA)in2004anditsactualcontentswereunveiled,HomelessAngelhadbeenconsideredalandmarkfilminthegenealogyofRealisminKoreancinema.ItisstilltruethatHomelessAngeldemonstratesalevelofsophisticationdeservingofsuchpraise.However,therecoveredfilmrevealedinformationthathadnotbeenpreviouslynoted:neartheend,thereisasceneinwhichthefilm'scharactersreciteinJapaneseapledgeofallegiancetoImperialJapan.ThissceneconstitutesacriticalflawinrecognizingHomelessAngelasarepresentativefilminKoreancinematichistory.Nevertheless,thereasonwhyKOFAcitesHomelessAngelamongthe100representativeworksofKoreancinemaisbecauseitisoneoftheveryfewsurvivingmoviesfromtheJapanesecolonialera.Indeed,thefactthatthepropagandisticsequenceisinsertedirrespectiveoftheplotandthusdoesnotposeasubstantialthreattothetext'sactualsubject,aswellasthefactthatthefilmshowsthehighestlevelofsophisticationamongcontemporaneousworks,bothcontributedtoitsinclusiononthelist.Amongsurvivinglate-colonialerafilms,HomelessAngelshowsthehighestlevelofrefinementintermsofnarrativeandtechnicalskill.ItalsoshowcasesthedirectorialexpertiseofChoiIn-kyu,whowasarespectedauteurofhistime.
