Indeed,oneofthemostprominentcharactersinthefilm,partisanleaderAgari(LeeYe-chun),isagoodcaseinpoint.Althoughheisportrayedasabrutalvillainthroughout,anightmaresequenceconveyedthroughanintricatemontagesequenceendowshimwithinternalconflictandfeelingsofguiltregardinghisowncrueltyandviolence.Further,theexpressionofhisobsessivedevotiontoideology,whichheisunabletoabandonevenattheend,elicitsameasureofsympathyfromtheaudience.Mostofall,thecharacterofAe-ran(NoKyeong-hee),acapableanddecisivefemaleleaderwhoshowsrigorousdedicationtothecommunistcauseuntilthelatterhalfofthemovie,isrepresentedinaconsiderablyattractivelight.Honestaboutherfeelingsanddesires,andmorecapablethananyoneelse,Ae-ranexemplifiestheimageofanactivewomanevenfromourcontemporaryperspective.
