SUMMARY Thephotographercoveredthesubject,thefuneralcortegeofPresidentMcKinley,frommanydifferentpositionsalongthelineofmarch.Thepeopleshownarethosewhoprecededthehearseandthosewhofollowedafterit.Firstcomethewalkingmilitary(Army,Navy,MarineCorps,NationalGuard)[endofpart2],andthenrankingmilitarydignitarieswhoimmediatelyprecedethehearse.Followingtheescortedhearsearethetwoclosedcarriages,containingthePresident'simmediatefamily.Afterthecarriages,aremoremournersonfoot,representingvariouscountries.ThereissomefilmtakenfromoneofthewingsoftheCapitoloverlookingthecourtyardofthatbuilding. FromacontemporaryEdisonfilmcompanycatalog:PRESIDENTMcKINLEY'SFUNERALCORTEGEATWASHINGTON,D.C.Ungodding.[codefortelegraphicorders].WhenphotographingthefuneralofPresidentMcKinleywesecuredanexcellentpositionatthefootofPennsylvaniaAvenueinWashington,D.C.,havinghadtheexclusiverightforanimatedpictureapparatusinsidethelines.OurcameraisfocusedlookingupPennsylvaniaAvenueandshowscountlessthousandsofmourningpeoplewholinethestreetsalongtheway.AsthefuneralprocessionwhichaccompaniesthebodyofourmartyredPresidentapproaches,ourcameraissetinmotionandpicturesofthemarchingmultitudewhopaythelasttributetoPresidentMcKinleyatourNationalCapitolarerecordedinthefollowingorder.ThelineisheadedbyatroopofU.S.Cavalry,followedbydetachmentsofheavyartillery[endofpart1];thencomestheLoyalLegion,followedbyG.A.R.detachments,madeupofbothFederalandConfederateveterans.NextinordercomestheGuardofHonor[endofpart2],whoareinturnfollowedbythehearse,whichisdrawnbysixblack-plumedandblack-nettedhorses.Insidethehearsecanbeseentheflagcoveredcasket.Thelightandcoloroftheprocessionissuddenlygone;spectatorssilentlybowandbaretheirheads.Thepageanthassuddenlybeentransformedintoafuneralcortege.Ourpositionwassoexcellentthatasthehearsepassedourcameraadistinctandlife-sizeviewwasprocured,showingthisvehicleofsadnessinallitsdetail.ThehearseiscloselyfollowedbytheAdmiralsoftheNavyandtheGeneralsoftheArmy.Nextinordercomethecarriagesofthefamilyandtherelatives,andthenthecarriageofPresidentRoosevelt,whichisdrawnbyfourblackhorses.NextcomethecarriageswhichcontainthePresident'sCabinet,theDiplomaticCorps,ChiefJusticeFullerandAssociateJustices,Senators,Congressman,GovernorsofStatesandGovernmentOfficials.ThesecarriagesarefollowedbytheUnitedStatesMarineBand,whichformsamostimposingspectacleasitmarchesslowlyandsolemnlytothestrainsof"NearerMyGodtoThee."FollowingtheUnitedStatesMarineBandandinstepwiththeslowfuneralmarchcomestheNationalGuardoftheDistrictofColumbiaandsailorsfromUnitedStatesBattleships,cladintheirnattyuniformsandjackeyhats.Thesailorsandsoldiersaremarchingsixteenabreastandmakeaveryimposingspectacleastheypassourcamera[sequencefromtheMarineBandtosailorsappearsinpart2].Theprocessionhavingpassed,thecrowdimmediatelysurgestowardtheCapitol,intentonsecuringaplaceinthelinethattheymayentertherotundaandlookuponthefaceoftheillustriousPresidentMcKinley.OurpanoramicdeviceisthensetinmotionandamostperfectandinterestingpictureissecuredasanendingtotheWashingtonfilm.ThepictureshowstheimmensecrowdssurgingtowardtheCapitol,andasrainbeginsfallingatthatmomenttensofthousandsofumbrellasareraisedforprotection.Ourcamerahavingbeenabovetheheadsofthepeople,amostnoveleffectissecured.Asthecamerarotates,thebaseandstepsoftheCapitolarebroughtintoviewandthecrowdisshowncrushingandstrugglingforentrancetotherotunda.OneofthemostperfectoftheMcKinleyfuneralpictures.ClassA350ft.$52.50.Wealsofurnisha75footstripoftheabove,showingthecrowdsattheCapitol.ClassAUngodily.$11.25 NOTES Copyright:ThomasA.Edison;21Sept1901;H8915.
