简介:(Paris)OnApril24[2006]theGeorgesPompidouCenterherebeganaretrospectivedevotedtoamansynonymouswithcinemaitself:Jean-LucGodard.Now75,thislegendaryfilmmakerhasbeenreinventingmotionpicturesforoverhalfacentury.Fromhis1955documentaryOperátionBétontotheworldpremiereofVraiFauxPasseport,avideoessaycommissionedbythemuseum,thefour-monthprogramincludesmorethan200filmsbyandaboutthearchmodernistoftheseventhart. FortheGodardcult,theretrospectiveisepochal;themothershipofmise-en-scènehaslanded.Butthemoviesareonlyforeplaytothemainseduction.Travel(s)inUtopia,Jean-LucGodard1946-2006,InSearchofaLostTheoremistheunwieldytitleofanunrulyinstallationthatsprawlsthroughoutthelargesouthgalleryofthemuseum.DesignedandexecutedbyMr.Godard,theshowopenedamidmuchcontroversyonMay11andcontinuesuntilAug.14. Heisclearlyhavinghismoment—ormaybenotsoclearly.SpeculationandanxietygatheredinthemonthsleadinguptotheopeningasitbecameknownthatrelationsbetweenMr.Godardandthemuseumhadsouredandthattheprojectwouldnotberealized.Thenatureofwhat,ifanything,wouldtakeitsplaceremainedanenigmauntilthemomentofitsunveiling... TalkhadlongcirculatedofanambitiousprojecttobedesignedbyMr.Godardinconjunctionwiththeretrospective.ConceivedincollaborationwithDominiquePaïni,theformerdirectorofculturaldevelopmentatthePompidouCenter,itwastohavebeencalledCollage(s)deFranceandtohavefunctionedasakindofelaborate,three-dimensionalmontageofMr.Godard'smethodsandmotifs. Thevisitorwouldproceedthroughaseriesofthematicrooms.MythwouldgivewaytoHumanityandTheCamera,passthroughTheUnconsciousandendwithMurderandTheTomb.Giantreproductionsofpaintings(byDelacroix,Goya,NicolasdeStaël)wouldadornthewallsalongsideprintedquotationsandblown-upmoviestills.Filmsandvideoswouldflickerontelevisions,screensandevenavideoiPod.SculpturalandenvironmentalobjectswouldalludetoFreud,theMiddleEastandcinematictechnologies. Collage(s)deFrancewastohavecarriedthesubtitleArchaeologyoftheCinema,anaptphrasegiventhatallthatremainsofthisfabledcreatureareitsbones.DetailedscalemodelsoftheoriginalconceptionarescatteredthroughoutTravel(s),anexhibitionaboutanexhibition—andthusquintessentialGodard... BeforeYesterdayiswhereyoufindtheintriguingmaquettesofCollage(s)deFrance,proppedonwoodencratesorpiledinstacks,theirmeticulouslydesignedchambersbuzzingwithelectricmotorsandtinylights.Theyarethedepositary,thesketch,thegraveyardofMr.Godard'soriginalconception,thescoreofasymphonyforeverunperformed.
