Eachteamwouldraceeachotherbutbeforetheybegan,theguysweresenttoacoldweathertrainingcamptogivethemanideaofwhatthey'dbefacing.Adoctortoldthemwhatwouldhappeniftheyforgottosealtheirtrousersandhowtogotothetoiletwithoutapolarbeargivingthembotherbuttheguysweren'ttakinghimseriously.ThenextdayJeremytaughtHammondhowtoski(despiteHamster'scriesoffear)andamanfromtheBritishSASwithadistortedfaceshowedJeremyhowcolditcouldbeifhefellthroughaholeintheice.Still,theTopGearcrewweren'ttakingthedangersseriouslysolegendaryexplorerSirRanulphFienneswasbroughtintodemonstratehowdangerousthisregioncouldbe. Eventuallythough,theywereoff.Withacopioussupplyofgin,JezzaandSlowblitzedtheopengroundNorthofCampResoluteandleftHamsterintheirpowderedsnowinpursuitofthepole.Hammondwasthetortoiseinthisraceandfellfromhisdog-sledwithalarmingregularity.Thiswasuntiltheyreachedthelegendary'boulder-fields'-hugelumpsofsnowandicethatwouldleaveyouraveragesemi-detachedpropertycoweringintheirshadows.Astheicestartedtocrackbeneaththewheelsofthepickup-truck,theboysstartedtorealizethattheyshouldhavepaidmoreattentiontothewarningstheyhadbeengivenbeforetheysetoff.
