简介：In1911,aspartofhismassiveundertaking,famedNorthwestphotographerEdwardS.CurtistravelledtoVancouverIsland,BritishColumbia,tovisittheKwakwaka'wakw.Bythenextyear,needingmoneyforhisprojectandtoaddtohisresearchandstillphotographywork,CurtisdecidedthatthebestwaytorecordthetraditionalwayoflifeandceremoniesoftheKwakwaka'wakwwastomakeoneofthefirstfeaturemotionpictures.Curtishadalreadyshotfootagein1906oftheHopiSnakedance,whichhehadpreviouslyshowedduringhistalks,butthiswastobeonagranderscale.Ittookthreeyearsofpreparationforthisonefilmincludingtheweavingofthecostumes;buildingofthewarcanoes,housefronts,poles;andthecarvingofmasks.AssistingonthefilmwasGeorgeHunt,aKwakwaka'wakwwhohadservedasaninterpreterforthefamousanthropologistFranzBoasnearlytwentyyearsbefore.Hunthelpedcontributesubstantialportionsofthefilm'sstoryaswell.Selectedforthe...…
