Theactors/acrobatsgetintooneliteralcliffhangerafteranother,danglingfromthefaçadesofskyscrapersandclimbingupladderswhichextendintothesky.Earlycinemaexploredthousandsofdifferentmethodsofslippingandfallingphotogenically,seeminglytotheveryextreme. By1925,alltricksandinnovativegagshadbeenusedup,andsincethenfilmhasbecomemorecalm,varyingitsestablishedpacesandfallsandmovingfromphysicalbacktopsychologicalmaterial.Deutsch’sfoundfootageispeopledwithrecycledfiguresandtheundead:Earlycinemasilentlyreproducesthelivingbeingswhooncedaredsubjectthemselvestoitsgaze;itdepictswhatonceseemedaliveasamere,thoughfaded,reflectionoflight.
