Dylandecidedtore-editthefilmhimself,assistedbylongtimeassociateHowardAlk.Dylanhowever.Pennebakerstated:"It'snotsomethingyoulearnparkingcarsinagarage.Yougottaknowsomeoftherulesandhedidn'tknowanyoftherules."ItcanbeassumedDylanknewsomeoftherules(hehad,afterall,seenfilms)andthatsomeoftheunconventionaleditingchoicesweredeliberate.DylanandAlk'scutwaseventuallyshowntoABCtelevision,whopromptlyrejecteditasincomprehensibletoamainstreamaudience.[1] ThefilmincludessomepowerfulliveperformancesofDylan'ssongsoftheperiod.Itwasnevergivenatheatricalreleaseormadecommerciallyavailableonvideo,butunauthorizedbootlegcopiescirculateamongDylancollectors.Alsocirculatinginvariousbootlegformatsisalongouttakefeaturingapossiblyalcohol-ordrug-impairedDylaninalimousinewithJohnLennon.AsDylanshowssignsoffatigue,Lennonurgeshimtogetagriponhimself:"Doyousufferfromsoreeyes,groovyforehead,orcurlyhair?TakeZimdon!...Comecome,boy,it'sonlyafilm.Pullyourselftogether."[2]ToddHaynes'sfilmI'mNotTherefeaturesadramatisationofthisconversation,withCateBlanchettasBobDylan.
