Nothingisexplaineddirectly,apartfromafewraresnatchesofthedirector’scommentaryandtheelegiac,melancholicmusicofCharlesIves.Heiseleavesthesesituationscaughtupintheirownintensity:fromarecentriotofhoodiesinBerlintotheenormousrallyintheAlexanderplatzattheendof1989,showingthecrowdsdefyingtheauthoritiesinoneofthoseraremomentswhenthereisafeelingthatanythingcouldhappen;frompreliminarydiscussionswiththestagedirectorFritzMarquardtonajointprojecttostageHeinerMüller’sGermania–DeathinBerlin,towhatremainstodayoftheguttedPalaceoftheRepublic. InMaterial,HeisehasconstructedapersonalreflectiononGermany’shistoryandonhisownmethod.ThomasHeisehasbeenploughingthisfurroweversincethe1980sintheGDR,weavingtogethersocio-politicalissuesinhisexplorationofHistory.InadialecticoftheOldandtheNew,closelyobservingfacesandlettingwordsdeploythemselves,hepaysthenecessaryattentiontothisgesture,whichopensupthematerialofHistoryitselfanditspossibilities. Filmmaterialshotovera20yearperiod,avisualdiary,outtakesthatjustwillnotleavetheircreatorsalone.Puttogetherinapoeticway,inwhichchronologytakesabackseattosenseandatmosphere.Historyisnotalinearsequencebutapileofevents.…
