ActIII ItbeginsinatavernwheretheOfficerwearsthechain,settinghimselfupasatargetforthemurderer.CardillacthenentersandwoundstheOfficer,buttheOfficerbeatsbacktheattackandholdsontothechain.HeadvisesCardillactoflee.TheGoldMerchantthenbringsonacrowdandaccusesCardillacofbeingthemurderer.Cardillacisbroughtin,followedbyhisdaughter.TheOfficerrebutsthechargeandaccusestheGoldMerchantofbeinganaccomplicetothemurderer.Intheensuingensemble,Cardillac'sdaughterrealizesthatherfatheristhemurderer.ThecrowdsingsCardillac'spraises,butastheycontinue,hiswordsmakethecrowdwonderabouttheidentityofthemurderer.Finally,Cardillacrevealstothecrowdthatheisthemurderer.Theydemandofhimrepentance,buthemakesnosuchgesture.ThecrowdthenlynchesCardillac,butbeforehedies,inhislastmoment,hereachesoutforthechainaroundtheOfficer'sneck,nothisdaughter.TheOfficerandCardillac'sdaughterswearmutualdevotion. .
