ForcenturiestheSwinomishIndianTribehasreliedonthenaturalresourcesoftheSkagitValley,throughclamming,crabbing,andfishing.Beforewhitesettlementtribalpeopleinhabitedthevalleys,rivers,andshorelines,livingofftherichland.Butin1855mostofthislandwastakenawaybytheFederalgovernmentintheTreatyofPointElliott.TheSwinomishpeoplewereleftwithbasichealthcare,somefishingrightsandasmallreservation.Inthelate1950s,twooilrefinerieswerebuiltonMarchPoint,anareathatwasoncepartoftheSwinomishreservationbytreaty.Overtime,thepresenceoftherefinerieshasnegativelyaffectedthehealthofthewaterandlandandtheveryfabricofculturaltraditionitself.MarchPointisthestoryofthreeboysawakeningtothedestructiontheserefinerieshavewroughtintheircommunities.Ambivalentenvironmentalambassadorsattheonset,theboysgrapplewiththeirassignmentthroughhumor,sarcasmandacandidself-knowledge.…
