ThefilmfromtheSouthernCrossFeatureFilmCompanyofAdelaide,wasmadebyRaymondLongfordandLottieLyell,atthetimebestknownpartnershipinAustraliancinema,starringLyellandavaudevillecomedian,ArthurTauchert,andfilmedmainlyintheinnercitySydneysuburbofWoolloomooloo. Tauchertplaysthe'sentimentalbloke',aSydneylarrikin,whovowstoabandonhislifeofgambling(playingTwo-up)anddrinkingwhenhefallsinlovewithDoreen(Lyell),whoworksinapicklefactory. Lyellisthoughttohaveco-authoredthescreenplay,writtenthetitles,editedthefilmandhelpedwiththedirection. TheSentimentalBlokeusesintertitlestakenfromtheoriginalpoemwritteninAustralianslangandwasahitwhenitopenedinMelbourneTownHallonOctober41919,breakingallexistingboxofficerecords.ItwasalsopopularinBritainandNewZealand,butdidnotsucceedintheU.S.,wheretestaudiencesfailedtounderstandthelanguage.DespitebeingrecutwithAmericanisedintertitles,havingsomescenescutout,andrenamedfortheAmericanmarketasTheStoryofaToughGuy,itwaswithdrawnfromdistribution. Thefilmwasrediscoveredinthe1950sandanewprintscreenedattheSydneyFilmFestivalin1955,andLongfordwasfoundtobeworkingasanightwatchmanontheSydneywharfs,(Lyellhaddiedin1925oftuberculosis). SincethentheoriginalnegativesenttotheU.S.wasdiscovered(labelledasTheSentimentalBlonde)attheFilmArchiveatGeorgeEastmanHouseInternationalMuseumofPhotographyandFilminRochester,NewYork,foundtobeadifferentversionandofabetterqualityprintthananyoftheAustraliancopies.Thenewversionpremieredatthe2004SydneyFilmFestivalandhasplayedatthe2005LondonFilmFestival. 详情
