IntimehedecidedtotakehisrevengebydeclaringwaronKingAritthajanaka.BeforeAritthajanakawenttobattlewithhisbrother,hemadehispregnantwifepromisethatshouldhebekilled,shewouldfleefromMithilainordertoprotecttheunbornchild. Whensheheardoftheking'sdeathatthehandofhisbrother,Polajanaka,shegatheredhergoldandjewelsintoabasketandcoveredthemwithrice.Sheputonsomewornanddirtygarmentsandblackenedherfacewithsootsothatshewouldnotberecognized.Then,liftingthebasketontoherhead,shewentunnoticedoutofthecitybythenortherngate.Now,thechildinthefleeingqueen'swombwastobeaGreatBeing,orBodhisatta,andtheattentionofSakka,kingofthegods,wasdrawntothequeen'splight.Hethereforeattiredhimselfasanoldmandrivingacarriage.Onarrivingatthequeen'sside,heaskedherwhereshewasbound.ShehadinmindtogotothecityofKalacampa,sixtyleaguesaway,butdidnotknowtheway.Thedisguisedgodofferedtotakeherthere,andafterenteringthecarriage,thequeenfellintoaheavysleep.BynightfallthecarriagehadreachedtheedgeofKalacampa.Whentheamazedqueenaskedhowtheycouldhavereachedthecitysosoon,Sakkatoldherthathehadcomebyastraightroadknownonlytothegods,thendeparted. InKalacampa,theunrecognizedqueenwasobservedbyanorthernBrahminteacherofgreatfame.Whenheaskedwhoshemightbe,shetoldhim,"ThechiefqueenofKingAritthajanakaofMithila,latelykilledinbattle.Ihavecomehereinordertosavethelifeofmyunbornchild." Crowdedonboardwerethemenandanimalsfromsevenlargecaravans.Aftersevendaysofplungingthroughtheheavyseasattopspeed,theoverloadedshipbegantofounder.Planksbrokeoff,andthewaterrosehigherandhigher.Mahajanaka,knowingthattheshipwassinking,didnotpanic.Hepreparedhimselffortheordealbyeatingafullmeal,coveredhimselfwithsugarandgheetoprotecthimselffromthewater,thentiedhimselftothemast.Whentheshipwentdown,menandanimalsweredevouredbythesharksandfierceturtlesthatinfestedtheocean,butthemastremainedupright.Mahajanakawithhissuperiorstrengthwasabletothrowhimselfafardistancefromtheship,thusescapingthefateoftheotherpassengers.OnthatdayPolajanakadied,leavingthethroneofMithilavacant. Mahajanakafloatedintheoceanforsevendays,takingnofood.DuringthistimethegoddessManimekhalawasenjoyingthepleasuresofheaven,neglectingherdutiesasguardianoftheseas.Atlastshespiedhimandrecognizedthathewasnotanordinarymortal.Shetookhiminherarms,andMahajanaka,thrilledbythetouchofthegoddess,fellintoatrance.SheflewwithhimtoamangogroveinthekingdomofMithila,whereshelaidhimonhisrightsideonaceremonialstoneinthemiddleofthegrove. Fromhisdeathbed,thekingofMithilahadtoldhisministersthattofindamanworthyofbeingking,theymustlookforonewhocouldanswercertainriddles,whocouldstringtheking'spowerfulbow,andwhocouldpleasehisdaughter,thebeautifulandintelligentPrincessSivali.Thereweremanycandidatesforthethrone.Eachone,inanefforttowinSivali,obeyedhereverywhim.Themoretheytriedtopleaseher,themoreshescornedthemandsentthemaway.Moreover,notonehadthewittoanswertheriddlesorthestrengthtostringtheroyalbow. Meanwhile,PrincessSivaliwaswaiting.However,whenthenewkingarrivedhedidnotvisitherorpayheranyattention.Onedaywhenhewasstrollinginthegarden,shecouldbearhisindifferencenolonger.Runninguptoofferhimherarmtoleanon,sheshowedthathepleasedher.Shortlythereaftershebecamehisqueen. Onedaythekingwasridingthroughhiskingdomwithhisministerswhenheobservedtwomangotrees.Theonethathadbeenfullofmangoeswasbrokenandtornbythepeoplewhohadcometopickthefruit,whiletheother,thoughbarren,stoodgreenandwhole.Thushecametounderstandthatpossessionsbringonlysorrow,andhedeterminedtoputasidehiskingdomandtakeupthelifeofanascetic.Aftershavinghisheadandputtingontherobesofahermit,hedepartedfromthepalace.ButQueenSivali,wholovedhim,followedhimwithgreatretinue.Whereverhewent,shewasbehindhim.Atlasthecouldbearitnolonger.Hecutastalkofgrassandsaidtoher,"Asthisreedcannotbejoinedagain,soyouandIcanneverbejoinedagain."
