LaterIsraelapologisedforwhatitclaimedtobeatragiccaseofmistakenidentity.ItsaidthatithadbelievedtheshiptobehostileEgyptiannavalvessel.USPresidentLyndonJohnsonwasprivatelyfuriousbutpubliclytheWhiteHousechosenottochallengethewordofitsclosestMiddleEastallyandacceptedthattheattackhadbeenacatastrophicaccident. However,asthisexclusiveAlJazeerainvestigationreveals,freshevidencethrowsnewlightonexactlywhathappenedthatfatefulday-andtheremarkablecoverupthatfollowed. Backin1980,IpromisedmyfriendthatifIevergotthechanceIwouldmakeafilmaboutit.Overtheyears,Ipitchedtheideatonumerousbroadcastersandalwaysgotthesameresponse:eyesrolledupwards,usuallyfollowedbythestatement,"Areyoucompletelymad?" Fastforwardto2009andIwasaguestspeakerattheNSA'sbiennialconferenceonhistoricalcryptography,talkingaboutanunsolvedcodeonan18thcenturymonumentinanEnglishstatelyhome. Whilethere,Iwenttotwoothersessions-bothaboutattacksonAmericansignalintelligencenavalvessels. ThefirstwasthecaptureoftheUSspyship,thePueblo(boardedbyNorthKoreanforcesin1968-andneverreturned).Thesurvivorsofthatincidentweretreatedlikeheroesandfetedonstage. ThenextdaytherewasasessionabouttheUSSLiberty.JamesScott,whohaswritteneasilythebestbookontheLibertyattack,wasonstageandlimitedtohisallotted20minutes.RangedagainsthimwerethreeIsraeliapologists,allofwhomwereallowedtooverruntheirtime.SurvivorsfromtheLibertyaffairwereallowedtositintheaudience,buttheyweredeniedanysayinproceedings. AsanEnglishman,IwasbroughtupwithastrongsenseoffairplayandIthoughtthiswasadisgrace.Itwasgruesometowatch.First,thecrewhadbeenattackedinbroaddaylightbyacloseally,thentheywerebetrayedbytheirgovernmentandnowtheywerebeinghumiliatedbythesameagencymanyhadworkedforbackin1967. Earlierthisyear,Iacquiredacopyoftheaudiotapeoftheattackasithadunfolded,therealtimeconversationsbetweenIsrealiAirForcepilotsandtheircontrollersbackatbase.Ithadneverbeenbroadcastbefore.IwenttotalktoAlJazeeraandaftercarefulconsideration,thenetworkcommissionedthefilm. Onlocation,itallstartedwithJamesScott(whogetsaco-producercreditonthisproject).Whenwritinghisbook,hehadalreadyinterviewedthesurvivorsaswellasmanyofthekeypeopleintheWashingtonpoliticalandintelligencemachinefromthattime.Theintroductionshemadewouldproveinvaluableaswebeganfilminginterviews. Theveteranswereextraordinary.Oneafteranother,theyweregenerouswiththeirtime,uniformlyeloquentandpassionateandaboveall,honestintheirrecollections. TheyallfeltbetrayedbytheAmericangovernmentbutwerekeentoexonerateordinaryJewishpeoplebothinIsraelandwithout,foranyresponsibilityfortheincident.TheirbeefwassimplywiththeseniorIsraeliofficersinthecontrolroomandtheirsuperiorshigherupthecommandchainwhohadorderedtheattack. Afterafewdaysfilming,IrangElaineMorris,myproducerbackinLondon.Sheaskedhowthingsweregoing.AllIcouldsaywasthatthequalityoftheinterviewswasthebestIhadeverexperiencedinmanydecadesinthisbusiness. InTexasweinterviewedBobbyRayInman,anintelligenceofficerwithaglitteringtrackrecordattheCIA,NavalIntelligenceandasaformerdirectoroftheNSA.MycontactsintheUKintelligenceworldhadalwaystoldme"heisoneofthegoodguys"andIquicklydiscoveredwhy.Hewasfrankandclear.ThetopIsraelicommanders,heexplained,hadknownexactlywhattheyweredoingwhentheyattackedtheLibertyandwhenitcametoholdingthemtoaccount,theUSgovernmentrolledoverforthem. WefilmedanannualmemorialceremonyinWashington,D.C.Itwasemotional,visceralandtense,withsurvivors,familyandfriendsgatheredinthemorningsun.ListeningtoasolebuglerplayingtheUSNavy'slament,'Taps'isamemorythatwillneverfade. Yearsearlier,IhadvisitedtheUSmilitarygravesinArlingtonCemeterybutnow,followingtheceremony,IgottogothereagainwithDaveLucas,oneofthesurvivorsoftheattackandatrulywonderfulman. Wefilmedashewalkedupthehillcarryingawreathfromtheceremony.Alongsidehimwasacrewmember,aPortugueselanguagespecialist,whohadlefttheLibertyinSpainjustafewdaysbeforeitsailedoffuptheMediterraneantotakeuppositionofftheEgyptiancoast.HehadbeentemporarilyreplacedforthemissionbyanArablinguist.Heweptopenlyforthecomradeshehadsaidgoodbyeto,nevertoseeagain.Aswefilmedthepairlayingtheflowers,aninterviewwithoneoftheothersurvivors,JimKavanaghcamesuddenlytomind."Iwentthroughhell,"hehadsaidabouthisshipmates."Buttheyleftthisearth." Finally,wefilmedonasistershiptotheLiberty,nowmooredinSanFrancisco.ThecrewhauledanoutsizedUSflagupamastforus.Theflag-knownasthe"holidaycolours"-wasidenticaltothatwhichwasflownfromtheLibertyonJune8,1967.Itwashuge,clearlyvisibleformiles,andIknewimmediatelythatnoonecouldeverhavebeeninanydoubtaboutthenationalityoftheshipbeneathit.
