SergeDaneyisoneofthemostimportantfiguresofFrenchfilmcriticism,thoughverylittleofhisworkhasbeentranslatedintoEnglish,totheregretofmanycinephiles.HeworkedasacriticforCahiersducinémastartingin1964,andasitseditorfrom1973to1981,beforeleavingforthedailynewspaperLibération.Hediedin1992.GeorgesFranju’sEyesWithoutaFacecausedcontroversyandreceivedmixedreviewsuponitsreleasein1960,butisnowconsideredaclassicandmasterpieceforitspoeticnature,aninfluenceonmanyfilmmakers. Throughpenetratingassociationsoftext,clips,andsounds,allpoppinguponasimulatedcomputerscreen,FrenchresearcherandfilmmakerChloéGalibert-Laînéresurrectsthedialoguebetweenthesetwofigures,conductinganinvestigationintothenoisethatterrifiedDaney,aswellasothersthathavescaredher.Galibert-Laînéclearsthepathofherresearchandsucceedsatchillingtheviewerinturn. Asthefilmmakerstatesonherwebsite,“TheEyeWasIntheTombandStaredatDaneyexploresquestionssuchas:Doesanticipatinganemotionmakeitweakerorstronger?Howdomusicandsoundeffectsregisterinourmemories,whenourattentionismainlyfocusedonimages?”Galibert-LaînédirectedTheEyeWasIntheTombandStaredatDaneyinthecontextofalong-termresearchprojectentitled‘APortraitoftheSpectatorAsaCannibal’,thatstudiesourmemoriesoffilms,andhowviewersappropriateandreinventthefilmstheyhaveseen,incorporatingthemintotheirownpersonalexperience. ChloéGalibert-LaînéisaresearcherandfilmmakerbasedinParis,whoseworkisfocusedontherelationshipbetweencinemaandonlinemediaandispresentedinbothacademicandartisticcontexts.SheiscurrentlypreparingaPhDattheprestigiousÉcolenormalesupérieuredeParisandteachesfilmstudiesatUniversitéParis8.HerworkhasbeenshownattheArsElectronicaFestival,theLondonEssayFilmFestival,theRotterdamInternationalFilmFestival,IMPAKTFestival,andtheAustrianFilmMuseum.In2018,shewasArtistinResidenceatm-cult(Helsinki)throughtheEuropeanMediaArtPlatform(EMAP)andanArtofNonfictionGranteefromtheSundanceInstitute.
