  • Inthischarmingmemoirdocumentary,directorPearlGluck… Inthischarmingmemoirdocumentary,directorPearlGluckuseshumortodiffusehertakeontheserioustopicsofalienationfromone'sfamilyandculture,thelegacyoftheHolocaust,andthecelebritycultofHasidicJewishrabbis.BornintoaBrooklynHasidiccommunity,Gluckleftwhenhermotherdivorcedherfatherandchoseasecularlife.AfteryearsofestrangementfromherfatherandconflictedfeelingsaboutherHasidicupbringing,Gluckgoesonaquesttoretrievearevereddivan,afamilyheirloomuponwhichafamousrabbionceslept,inhopesthatbringingthisiconiccouchbacktoherfatherwillbringthetwotogether.Inherpursuit,Gluckmeetsherextendedfamily(ofvaryingreligiousorthodoxy)inHungary,takespart(alongwithherfather)inapilgrimagetothegravesofHasidicrabbis,andinterviewsaseriesofpeoplewhohavechosentoleavetheHasidiccommunity.Tongue-in-cheek,self-reflexivenodstothestoryfuelthefilm'sfast-pacedhumor.Forexample,Gluckchoosesthecovetedsofa,asymbolofthepowerofHasidicrabbisandfaith,toseatintervieweeswhohavelefttheHasidiccommunity.ThesurprisetwistofanendingprovidesanextrajabattherestrictivemaleforcesGluckchallengesthroughoutthefilm,andprovidesasardonicallyfunnysolutiontoGluck'sdilemmaofidentity.DIVANistheresultofaHungarianYiddishoralhistoryproject,fundedbyaFulbrightscholarshipGluckreceivedwhilestudyingatNewYorkUniversity.
