InPortugal,wherenearly50yearsofafascistdictatorshipwasover-thrownin1974,Mr.Kramerfoundthesortofrevolutionarystruggleinprogressthat"Ice"and"TheEdge"predict(sofar,fruitlessly)fortheUnitedStates.TherewassomethingextremelyinvigoratinggoinginPortugal,butalso—thisfilmseemstosaywithoutbeingentirelyawareofit—somethingthatwasn'tfollowingtheneatplansofthetheoreticians. InPortugal,wherethefilmisbeingdistributedasakindofteachingtoolinfactories,onfarmsandinneighborhoods,thetitleis"WilltheRevolutionTriumph?"TheAmericantitlebetterdescribesthemovie'scontentforthoseofuswhoaren'tknowledgeableaboutthepowerblocsstrugglingforcontrolinPortugal. Itisafilmofisolatedscenes—interviews,newsreelfootage,demonstrations,parades—alldesignedtopresentthecaseforoneofthemostmilitantofPortugal'spoliticalparties,theProletarianRevolutionaryParty,withnoattempttohidethefilmmakers'biases.Ifonedoesn'tsharethefilmmakers'particularMarxistwayoflookingattheworld,muchofwhatthetwonarrators(oneman,onewoman)tellusislikelytobereceivedwithskepticism,thoughtheiranalysesofPortugal'spastseemsoundenough. "ScenesfromtheClassStruggle"meanstoinform,nottoentertain.Evenso,it'sahandsomefilmtolookat,acollageoffootageincolor,inblackand-whiteandinmonochromes.ItstoneismeanttobeashighandfirmastheclenchedfistoftheCommunistsalute,butthefinaleffectofthepicturesweareshownisoneofchaos,confusion,ofpeoplebeingpolarizedintopoliticalpositionstheydon'tevenunderstand.
