OnenightToniforcesRosetorevealwhereinhishouseBergernkeepshismoney.AsToniisrobbingthehouse,thebankerunexpectedlyreturnsandisshotdeadbyToni.RoseandToniescapetotheAustrian“Semmering”toavoidcaptureaswellasstartinganewlife.Thereourshamelessheroinewillmeettherichestmanoftheplace(withpleasure!)Hannes(HerrHugoWerner-Kahle).Hannes’familyareknowas“würghand”foralegendandsometerribleincidentaboutthepowerfulforceoftheirhandsbutthat’snoproblemforRosewhowillseduceandmarryHannes,afactthatdoesn’tsetwellwithHannes’father(HerrViktorKutschera)whowarnshimthatRoseisawickedgirl. Whenafterwards,BaronStein(nowricherthaneversincehehasinheritedhismurdereduncle’sfortune)appearsinthesamesnowyAustrianmountains,RosefindsherselftornbetweenhimandHannes.Obviously,thisterribleconflictofloveandinterestswillendintragedy. “DieWürghand”(1920)isanAustriansilentfilmproductiondirectedbythelittleknownHerrCorneliusHintner(atfirst,hehassuccessasapainterandthenbecamemoreinterestedinphotographyandpictures,workingasacameramanontheBalkanfrontduringthefirstworldwar).Duringthe20’shisartisticassociationwiththeItalianactressCarmenCartellieriwasdecisive.DameCartellierihadcometoAustriain1920andbecameoneofthemostpopularactressesofthatcountry.Shefoundedthe“CartellieriFilmCompany”,“DieWürghand”beingherfirstsilentfilmproduction.It’sacarefulfilmthattakesadvantageofthescarcetechnicalimprovementsofthatera,oratleastintheAustrianfilmindustry,thatincludesskilfulfilmcontinuityandsomeeffectivespecialeffects. “DieWürghand”isaperfectfilmvehicleforDameCartellieriassheisthemainprotagonistofthefilm,aterriblefemmefatalewhousesanddiscardsmenforherownpurposes.HercharacterofRoseisstartlingnowadays,displayingalackofinhibitioninacoldandselfishwomanwhohasnoscruples.SometimesDameCartellieriisabittheatricalbutthat’snotaproblembecausetheoveractingfitsperfectlyforthecharacter;thatistosay,afaithfulcaricatureofwhatissupposedtobeawickedgirl. Don’tforgetalsothesufferingmenofthefilmandhowevenminorcharactersareruthlesslyusedbyRosetoadvanceherinterests.Bytheway,anotherinterestingaspectofthestory,thoughperhapsnotintentional,isthatuntilthemiddleoftheoeuvre,theaudiencedoesn’tknowexactlythetruerelationshipbetweenRoseandToni.Judgingbyscarcebutevidentsignsoneassumestheyareacouple.Whentheirrealrelationshipisrevealedlateranextraelementofperversityisaddedtothestory. Asacuriosity,DameCartellieriwillparticipateyearslaterin“OrlacsHände”(1924),anotherfilminwhichconflictivehandsareamaincharacterintheoeuvre,MEINGOTT!!...AhandyandobsessedsubjectforDameCartellieri,Jawohl!!....
