Inaculturalunion"bunddasneuefrankfurt"(alliancethenewfrankfurt),withajournalbythesamename,therehadalsobeen,amongothergroups,onefoundedforthedistributionandcreationofgoodfilm.Itwasjoinedtothe"LigafürunabhängigenFilm"(leagueofindependentfilm).Thereweretobecriticallecturesandtheproductionofourowninformativefilms.Thisgroupwasledbythreepeople,oneofthemwasI. OnedaythearchitectMartStamproposedtometomakeafilmontheBudge-homefortheagedbuiltbyhim,MoserandKramer.UnfortunatelyIwasnotinthepossessionofacameraofmyown.Therewasaphotographerwhohadacamerawithahandcrank.BasedonascriptwrittenbymeandMartStamIdirectedthefilm.Thisbuildinghadlightandsuninlargepleasantrooms.Ithadbeenfinishedin1929andwas,toFrankfurtstandards,verymodernofferingallamenitiestooldpeople.Thusthehomefortheagedwasfilmedandthewellbeingoftheoldwasshown.Thegroundplanofthebuildingaswellasthevariabilityofsomeroomswasanimatedthroughspecialeffectsusingdrawings.Afterthefirstshowingintheprogramofamatineeatthe"bunddasneuefrankfurt"alongwiththefilmsDieneueWohnung(TheNewApartment)byHansRichterandAbbruchundAufbau(TearingDownandBuildingUp)byWilfriedBassetheFrankfurterZeitungobservedatthetimethatithadbeenasuccessfuldemonstrationofculturalfilm.CinemasinFrankfurtandBerlintookoverthefilmasasupportingfeature.Filmdistributorwasthe"bunddasneuefrankfurt".Germanandforeignconstructioncompaniesboughtcopies. BychanceIwasabletobuythe35mmhandheldKinamo,acamerarecommendedbyJorisIvens.HehadmadehisfilmRegen(Rain)andpartsofhisZuiderseefilmwithsuchaso-calledmovingcamera.Inspringof1932the"VereinderFrankfurterErwerbslosen-Küchen"(UnionoftheFrankfurtunemployedkitchens)hadcontactedsomefilmcompaniesaskingforashortcommercial.TheFrankfurterVolksstimmewroteaboutthisinSeptember1932:"Itisinterestingthatlargefilmcompaniesrefusedproducingsuchafilmasthatofthekitchensoftheunemployedarguingthateventhecostsforthelightingequipmentwouldbetoohigh.FrauBergmann-Michelforthatreasonhadtomakethefilmonherowninspiteofgreatdifficultiesandwiththesmallestbudget.Theoftenproclaimeddeadavant-gardeoffilmthatworkshereinFrankfurtinthefilmleaguethatisjoinedtothe'bunddasneuefrankfurt'hasprovenonceagainwithitssolutionforthetaskathanditsrighttoexist."Withthree1000WbulbsinmybackpackandthelittleKinamo(whosefilmnegativesIinsertedintocassettesindarkbasementsorphotoshops)Ihadmadeit.Footage-theproductofobservationsin28kitchenswhereunemployedhandedout10.000litersoffoodtounemployed-servedasbasisforthecommercial'sthemewhosetaskitwastocommunicateconvincinglytherequestformoredonations.Thefilmranassupportingfeatureincinemasandasanopen-airfilmatnightattheHauptwacheunderneaththeSchillermonumentthere.Ticketsalesweremorethan600Reichsmarkspernight. BoldlyIwentaboutthethirdandfourthfilmwithmyownideas.Adocumentaryreportaboutthe"FliegendeHändler"(TravellingHawkers)duringthetimeoftheunemploymentsuggestedthesubject.Withthe35mmhandheldcameraonecouldunseenfilminsquaresandstreetsthehawkers,someofthemwithsensationalistpromotionalactsandotherswhotriedhardtoavoidobservationbypolicemen,forthewaresweretobesoldwithoutpermission.Thefinalsequencesweredevotedtothevendorswithperformancesatthewholesalemarket'sfairgrounds.TherethepoliticalpolicewasalreadywatchingmeandIwasgladtobeabletocarrymyfilmcassetteshomeuntouched.Thefourthfilm-alyricallandscapetheme-SpazierganginderRhön(AWalkintheRhön)wasofinteresttomemostlyforthefishingthathadbeentheimpetusforthewalkonwhichImanagedtocatchwithmycamerathetroutjumpingintheriveratdusk.
