Thefilmopenswitha12-minutemontagesequenceofimpressionisticimages.Shotsofthesky,colourfullyabstractwoodsanddancinglightreflectionsonthewater'ssurfacearetechnicallysoestrangedthatgraphicandtexturalqualitiesofnaturearethrownintorelief.Graduallytheabstractimagesbecomerepresentational,andthefilmleadsusintothedesertedcorridorsofapsychiatricclinicwhichayoungmanisjustleaving.Inanexpandedmomentofconfrontationwithrealitybeyondtheclinic'swalls,heimagineshimselfperceivingasthreedifferentpeople,who,parallelintimebutindependentlyofeachother,spendadayinToronto:aheroinaddictcommittingathefttoobtainhisdose;ayoungmotherenjoyingafreedayintown,andanelderlyentomologistinhislaboratorydiscoveringanunusualspeciesofmoth.Theyallliveintheiridentifiedclassifiedsystems,seekingwaysofidentityandstability.Inthefinalshotsthefourcharactersgatherinasubwaystation.Unawareofeachother,theyareunitedforabriefmomentbytheframeworkofthefilmimages. Fragmentedstoriesandwaysofperceptionareapproachedbyemployingestrangingfilmtechniques:animatedphotographs,combinationsofslowmotionwithstopmotioneffects,sequencesimmersedincoolblue,diversequalitiesoffilmstock.Togetherwiththeassociativesoundtrackfeaturingchoralmusic,voiceswhispering,noisesandrhythmicsoundstheybuildanaudio-visualcompositionwhichletsthesparsedialoguefadeintothebackground. Justastheyoungmanisseekingtoaffirmhisidentity,filmmakerPeterMettlersearchesforhisowncinematicform.InhisfirstlongfilmMettlerexploresafreeformoffilmmakingthatwillbecomeessentialtohislaterwork;areflectivemannerofhandlingthemedium,adiscussionoftensionsandassociationsandanon-linearnarrativeformdemandingtheaudience'sactiveparticipation.
