WenceslauJosédeSousadeMoraeswasborninLisbononthe30thMay1854. AfterstudyingattheNavalCollegeheservedaboardseveralwarshipsofthePortugueseNavy.In1885hetraveledforthefirsttimetoMacao,wherehesettled.TherehewasDeputytotheCaptainoftheHarbor,andteacherofMacaoSecondarySchoolsinceitscreationin1894.WhiletherehemarriedVong-Io-Chan(akaAtchan),aChinesewomanofwhomhehadtwosons,andestablishedafriendshipwithCamiloPessanha,acelebratedpoet. Meanwhile,in1889,hetraveledforthefirsttimetoJapan,acountrythatcharmedhim,andwherehewillreturn,inofficialduty,severaltimesinthenextfewyears.In1897hevisitsJapanwiththeGovernorofMacao,andwasreceivedbytheEmperorMeiji.ThefollowingyearhedesertedAtchanandhistwosons,andmovedtoJapan,asconsulinKobe. HislifethereismarkedbyhisliteraryactivityandbythechronicleshesendstoseveralPortuguesenewspapersandmagazines,byhisloveaffairswithtwoJapanesewomen(Ó-YonéFukumotoandKo-Haru),andbyhisincreasing"japonisation". DuringthenextthirtyyearsWenceslaudeMoraeswastobethegreatPortuguesesourceofinformationabouttheEast,sharinghisintimateexperiencesofday-to-daylifeinJapanwithhisreadersinPortugal,inaparallelactivitytothatofLafcadioHearn,ofwhomhewasacontemporary. Saddenedbythedeath,duetoillness,ofÓ-Yoné,WenceslaudeMoraesrenouncedhispostasconsul,andmovedtoTokushima,herbirthplace.TherehelivedwithKo-Haru,anieceofÓ-Yoné,withwhomhesharedhislifeuntilherdeath,alsoduetoillness.
