Caldwell'sharshpoliciessoonalienateevenVictoria,whohasbefriendedFowler'swife.Eventually,moraleattheupperechelonsgoesfrombadtoworse.First,BillFowlershootshimself,undercircumstancesthatcouldbeaccidentalbutprobablyarenot.Then,afterFarrgivesleavetoasquadroncommanderwhoseunitisnotingoodshape,Caldwellasksthebrigadiergeneralcommandingthe904th'sparentairdivisiontoreplaceFarrasvicewingcommander.Hesays,"IinheritedthemostpopularwingvicecommanderinSACbutonewhowillnotassumeresponsibility!"HethensharplycontradictsFarr'srosyapprovalofthewing'sperformanceduringapost-missioncritiqueofB-52GandKC-135AaircraftcommandersandtheircrewsasapreludetoinformingFarrthatheisfired.ThisalmostcausesthefinalbreachbetweenCaldwellandhiswife,especiallysincegossiphashadFarrandVictoriadriftingintoanaffairarumortowhichCaldwelllendsnocredence,butonethatVictoriahasheard,leadinghertothinkthatsheisinsomewayresponsibleforFarr'simpendingdismissal. Soonafter,whileCaldwellvisitsFowlerinaSanFranciscohospitaltosnaphimoutofhisdepression,hereceivesacallfromtheoperationschiefsayingthat"anunidentifiedKC-135"is"onfinalapproach,noemergencydeclared."SuspectinganotherORI,Caldwellorderstheofficertonotifythebattlestaffatonce.Caldwellcannotreturntobasefastenough,however,andFarrmustassumecommandinhisabsence.Inthiscapacity,Farrmakesakeydecision:tolaunchaB-52whichcannotproducefullpowerononeofitsengines,aviolationofpeacetimeflightsafetyregulations,because"We'resimulatingwartimeconditions."
