OneofthegreatestdiscoveriesinthissensewasformerLuisTrenkerassistantFerdinandKhittl’sDieParallelstraße(1961),notbychanceproducedbyhis“GesellschaftfürbildendeFilme”(“Societyofeducationalfilm”).Notathirdpath,butaparallelstreetbecomesthesymbolofKhittl’senterprise,athoughtfulandonlyoccasionallywinkingmeta-commentonmetaphysicsanddocumentaryobjectivityinfilm,sometimesextraordinarilyhilarious,sometimeshardlyabletogetawayfromitsdeliberatelystarchedsetting.Agroupofyoungmenistryingtoanalyseanenormousnumberoffragmentaryfilmdocuments(shotbyKhittlandhiscameramanRonaldMartiniduringtwoextensivetravelsaroundtheworldin1959and1960).The308“documents”–filmsaboutwateranderosion,Brasilia,avolcano,riceinAsiaorameanwhilelegendaryRosstäuscher(horsecheater)–arescreenedoneaftertheafterandintermittedbycommentsoftheteammembers(who,ontheirpart,arebeingcommentedbyasupervisor).“InaKafkaesqueroomfiveIonescoesquepeoplefindthemselvesinaSartreesquesituation,tryingtosolveaCamuesqueproblem”,asbackthenpre-eminentcriticHelmutFärberironicallydescribedthissetting.
