Butte'shistorywasentirelyshapedbyitsexploitationbytheAnacondaMiningCompany,which,attheheightofWWI,producedtenpercentoftheworld'scopperfromthetown'sdepths.Warprofiteeringandthecompany'sextremeindifferencetothesafetyofitsemployees(mortalityratesinthemineswerehigherthaninthetrenchesofEurope)ledtoLittle'sarrival."Theagitator"foundinthedesperate,agonizedminersoverwhelmingsupportforhisideas,whichincludedtheabolishmentofthewagesystemandtheestablishmentofasocialistcommonwealth.
