ThefilmwasmademorethantenyearsafterthedemiseoftheSovietUnion-whenthevarioussocialistrepublicssuddenlyfoundthemselveswithunexpectedindependence–whichbroughtwithitaneconomicmalaisefollowingthewithdrawalofMoscow’ssubsidies,andanideologicalvacuumwhichtogetherleftKyrgyzstananditsneighbouringCentralAsianrepublicsfacingeconomichardshipsandsocialupheavals. ItcentersonthelivesofpeopleinonesmallKyrgyzvillage,asnapshotoflifewithhappyandsadelementssidebyside.Itcanalsobeseen,however,asprovidingacommentonthecountry’shistory,societyandcultureintheperiodfollowingindependence,“wheretheaveragecitizenisstrugglingwithasheerinsurmountablenumberofdifficulties.” Fourteenyearsintoindependence,thereareseveralthingsthatjustdon’tseemtoworkinthissmallKyrgyzvillage:thefarmsarenotworking;thepeoplearepoorwithoutprospectsforabetterfuturealthoughafew“rich”peoplehavebenefited–tothedisadvantageoftheaveragevillager,employmentisvirtuallynon-existantandthelittlemoneythatisearnedis,alltoooften,spentonvodka.
