InadditiontoKiev,Belikovwasallowedtoshootonactuallocations,includingthecontaminatedtownofPripyat(rowafterrowofabandoned,deathlystillapartmentbuildingsandstreets)and,mosthorrifyingly,thereactorareasofChenobylitself(forwhichscenesBelikovandhiscrew,threeyearsafterthefact,riskedcontaminationthemselves).Yettherearealsotouchesofpoetryhereandsomenearsurrealscenes(thesuddenappearancesofthewhite-suitedfiguresatpublicoutdoorevents,whichthegovernmenthadallowedtogoonaftertheexplosion).
