Eighteendaysbeforetheseasonstarted,theSeptember11,2001attackstookplaceinNewYork.Theseasonpremiere(hostedbyReeseWitherspoon)wentonasscheduled,withaspecialcoldopenfeaturingRudyGiuliani,theMayorofNewYorkCityatthetime,alongwiththefirefightersandpoliceofficersofNewYork,declaringthatdespitetheterroristattack,NewYorkCitywillrunasnormalandSaturdayNightLivewillgoonasplanned(withLorneMichaelsaskingGiuliani,"Canwebefunny?"andGiulianireplying,"Whystartnow?"). ThreeweeksintotheseasontheshowfacedanotherscarewhenanthraxwasfoundintheGEBuilding(fromwheretheshowisbroadcast).Thescarecausedmostofthecastandcrew,aswellasthatweek'sguesthostDrewBarrymore,toevacuatethebuilding.
