Irecalledthatsomeofthemenbehindbarshadbeenswaddledinsheetsastheystoodorhadlaincoveredontheirbeds-I'dassumedthiswasbecausetheywerecamerashy-butinfact,itwasexplained,thiswasthebettertohide. Therewasanoddmomentwhenoneinmate,ayoungmannamedShug,pulledhistrousersdown.ButwhenIaskedhimwhathethoughthewasdoing,heseemedtothinkbetterofgunningandtookpartintheconversation. Anotherinmate,RodneyPearson,knownasHotRod,toldmehe'dbeeninsideforseveralyearsawaitingtrial.Prosecutorswantedtogivehimthedeathpenalty. Someinmatesareonremandforlongperiods Iaskedhimif,bysomequirkoffate,I'dbeenarrestedandsenttotheircell,abespectacledEnglishmanwithacollegeeducationwhowasclearlynotcutouttofight,theymightletmeoffthe"mandatoryrec".Theanswerwasanemphatic"no". Itisalegalstrategyknownas"distancing".Someinmateshadbeeninsideforfiveyearsormore,stilltechnicallyinnocent,puttingupwiththemostbrutalconditions,forachanceofabettersentence.
