  • Thevideoseemstodiffersharplyfromthecustomaryfeatur… ThevideoseemstodiffersharplyfromthecustomaryfeaturesofMik’swork.Forthefirsttime,theimagesareaccompaniedbysoundandconstitutedocumentsof“real”liferatherthansomethingdeliberatelystagedbytheartist.Thesevariationshelp,however,toestablishthecomplexrelationshipbetweenworkandpublic–halfwaybetweenambiguousincomprehensionandmorbidfascination–typicalofalltheartist’swork.Heretoo,feelingsoffrustrationbuildupintheviewer,whocanreconstructnonarrativethreadbutisinanycasecapturedbyplayingonthevoyeuristicelementtypicalofthemassinformationsociety.Thereferenceinthetitleandthecompositionoftheworktothedynamicsofacertaintypeofpublicationor“truthTV”servestoattracttheviewer,whoishookedbythepromiseofahorrifyingevent,tragedyordramatransformedintospectaclewithoutwonderingwhy,withoutlookingfortheunderlyingfactsorreasons.Theseimagesseeminfactfarmoreabsurdandunbelievablethanthefabricationsengineeredbytheartistinpreviousworks,suchasamassivetrafficaccidentandacolossalstockexchangecrash. Mikthusreverseshiscustomaryartisticpracticebutobtainsthesameeffectinmakingusawareofthesheerlunacyofasocietyinwhichchildrenoroldpeopletakeuparmsinthenameofcenturies-oldnationalisticsentiments.Thecriticalattackis,however,aimedaboveallattheviewer.Whileexposingthemedia’scensorshipandmanipulationofinformation,theartistisprimarilyconcernedtochallengethecommonsenseofdecencyofpeoplewhofeelamorbidcuriosityorattractionwithrespecttotheseimagesbutneverthelessremaininertandpassive.
