  • Yale-educatedandbornwithasilverspooninhismouth,Sam… Yale-educatedandbornwithasilverspooninhismouth,SamWagstaff’stransformationfrominnovativemuseumcuratortoRobertMapplethorpe’sloverandpatronisintensivelyprobedinBlackWhiteGray.Duringtheheadyyearsofthe1970sand1980s,theNewYorkCityartscenewasabuzzwithanewspirit,andMapplethorpewouldbeatthecenterofit.WagstaffpulledhimfromhissuburbanQueensexistence,gavehimacameraandbroughthimintothisartworldthatseemedtobewaitingforhim,creatingthemanwhoseinfamousimagesinstilledemotionsrangingfromawetoanger.Inturn,Mapplethorpebroughttheformerlystarched-shirtpreppietotheworldofdrugsandgayS-and-Msex,well-documentedinhisstill-startlingphotographs.Twentyfiveyearsseparatedthelovers,buttheirrelationshipwassymbiotictoitscore,andthetworemainedtogetherforever.Thefilmalsoexplorestherelationshipbothmenhadwithmusician/poetPattiSmith,whose1975debutalbum“Horses”catapultedhertofame. Wagstaff’sstoryisoneofpersonaltransformation—fromconservative,starchy,Yale-educatedpreppytodowntownhabitué,hipsterandexperimenter.BothheandMapplethorpeenabledeachothertodiscoverdifferentpartsofthemselves—bothmenencouragedtheothertominenewterritoryintheartsandintheirpersonallivesaswell.Wagstaff’sdeathfromAIDS,in1987,andlaterMapplethorpe’s,in1989,markedtheendofanera.BlackWhiteGrayrevealsthepowerfultroikathesetwomenformedwithPattiSmith,andtheinfluencetheircollectiveworkcontinuestohaveoverpresent-dayartandculture.
