ClaudeCahun(writerMarcelSchwob'sniece)andMarcelMoorewerehalf-sisters.Theyfellinlovearound1910andweretospendtheirwholelivestogether;theyarecommonlyregardedasthefirstlesbiancoupletoliveandworktogetherasartists.AfterstudyinginOxfordandattheSorbonne,ClaudeCahunmadeanameforherselfasawriterandphotographerinParis.Herself-portraitsinparticular,wearinganarrayofdifferentmasksandcostumes,weretomakeherfamous,whileMarcelMoorebegantogainareputationasanillustratoranddraughtswoman.In1932/33theyjoinedtheanti-fascistartistsassociationAEAR(AssociationdesEcrivainsetArtistesRévolutionnaires),andin1937theymovedtoJersey,oneoftheChannelIslands. WhentheGermansoccupiedJerseyin1940,thetwogirlfriendsembarkeduponacampaignofartisticresistance,puttingupposters,writingmani-festosandpamphletswithwhichtheyhopedtoincitetheoccupyingforcestomutiny.In1944,bothwomenwerearrestedbytheGestapoandsentencedtodeath;themajorityoftheirartisticoutputwasdestroyed.TheywerereleasedfromimprisonmentaftertheislandwasliberatedinMay,1945.ClaudeCahunwasnevertorecoverfromtheexperience.
